Steve is the Managing Partner of Smart Concept Groups. Prior to Smart Concepts, Steve was the Chief Financial Officer and Chief Operating Officer at BlueStem Wealth Partners (BlueStem) for the nine years. At BlueStem, he oversaw the firm’s financial and operational aspects, including setting advisor growth goals, financial statement oversight, managing mergers and acquisitions, and spearheading strategic growth initiatives. Steve was also instrumental in leading Bluestems’ successful transition to an RIA model. Moreover, Steve’s dedication to building a trusted, collaborative culture and fostering a leaderful mindset has been paramount to BlueStems’ success.
Prior to his tenure at BlueStem, Steve served as a Franchise Field Vice President (FVP) for the Upper Midwest Territory for Ameriprise Financial from 2006 to 2015. His responsibilities included developing annual strategic growth initiatives for over 400 advisors, enhancing revenue and Assets under management (AUM) per advisor, recruiting experienced advisors, nurturing a positive regional culture, and ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements. Before assuming his FVP role, Steve ran a successful solo practice for 15 years.
Steve is a strategic leader, characterized by his ability to remain calm under pressure while offering thoughtful solutions. He believes his interpersonal skills have enabled him to excel in various roles while upholding a high level of personal integrity. Steve’s commitment to goal attainment, relationship-building, and results further highlights his leadership acumen.

Steve and his wife Carla have been married for 29 years, and they have two adult boys, Elijah and Ethan and one new daughter-in-law, Rachel. Steve enjoys spending time with his family, mountain bike riding in the summer, all types of skiing in the winter, and any time at the cabin.
